Frequently asked questions about restaurant gift cards

An average restaurant with 50 seats selling 20 gift cards per month at €50 average generates €1,000 gross revenue per month. After deducting costs and with an 80% redemption rate, the net extra revenue is typically €800–€950 per month – that's €10,000+ per year in near-pure margin, since the cost per card is minimal.

Unredeemed cards are cards for which you received payment but which are never exchanged. The percentage varies significantly by sector and type of venue. In Belgium, retaining the value of expired cards is legal, provided the validity period and expiry date are clearly stated at the time of purchase. There is no legal minimum validity period, but terms cannot be unreasonably short. In the Netherlands the rules are stricter: the law (Article 6:236t of the Dutch Civil Code, in force since 1 January 2022) requires a minimum validity of 2 years for gift cards. Cards with a shorter period can be voided by the consumer. After a valid expiry date you may retain the remaining value, but the mandatory 2-year period substantially limits the unredeemed benefit. Always clearly state your validity period and terms at the point of sale.

The cost per card depends on your plan: Basic (€2.99), Growing (€0.99) or Pro (€0.49), excluding Mollie payment costs (avg. €0.39 per transaction for Bancontact). As one of the few providers, RestoManager lets you pass the RestoManager fee on to the end customer — the Mollie payment cost (avg. €0.39) always remains with the restaurant owner.

Yes. The RestoManager gift card module is fully integrated into the reservation widget on your website or Facebook page. Visitors can purchase a card directly during the booking process or as a separate purchase. Payment is processed via Mollie (Bancontact, Visa, Mastercard, iDEAL). The card is automatically sent by email.

Four proven tactics: (1) Actively promote your gift cards via your newsletter and social media around holidays (Mother's Day, Christmas, Valentine's Day). (2) Put the gift card button prominently on your homepage – not just in the widget. (3) Train your staff to suggest cards for phone reservations. (4) Create package deals (e.g. dinner for 2 + bottle of wine) to increase the average card value.
